Direct measurements of the ionospheric convection variability near the cusp/throat

چکیده
[1] For the first time precise measurements obtained using Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radars are used to quantify the temporal variability in the convection velocity and identify the cause of the variations for a particular event located in the vicinity of the cusp. Using SuperDARN line-of-sight (LOS) Doppler velocities near 1200 magnetic local time and a standard fitting technique, the observed temporal variability is related to dayside convection features such as the cusp, convection throat, and convection reversal boundaries (CRBs). Two distinct regions of variability are observed: a region of high (often >500 m s ) hourly temporal variability occurring near the dayside CRB of the dusk convection cell during interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By < 0, and a region of very low (<100 m s ) temporal variability in the convection throat. The source of the high variability near the dayside dusk CRB is caused primarily by motion of the large-scale convection pattern most likely due to the variable IMF. The line-of-sight velocities in this region fluctuate between sunward and antisunward directed flow depending on the position of the CRB relative to the radar observation area. In the convection throat, however, steady antisunward directed flow exceeding 500 m s 1 is observed despite the variable IMF. Based on these observations it is expected that increased Joule heating due to variability in the electric field occurs near the dayside CRB of the crescent-shaped convection cell and little additional Joule heating occurs in the convection throat.

Variability of Dayside Convection and Motions of the Cusp/cleft Aurora
We present measurements of the ionospheric plasma flow over the range of invariant latitudes 71-76 ø , observed at 10-second resolution using both the EISCAT radars, with simultaneous observations of the 630 nm cusp/cleft aurora made by a meridian-scanning photometer at Ny ]klesund, Svalbard. متن کاملThe ionospheric signature of transient dayside reconnection and the associated pulsed convection return ̄ow
Three SuperDARN coherent HF radars are employed to investigate the excitation of convection in the dayside high-latitude ionosphere in response to transient reconnection occurring in the cusp region. This study demonstrates the existence of transient antisunward-propagating backscatter features at the expected location of the ionospheric footprint of the cusp region, which have a repetition rat...
متن کاملThe UV aurora and ionospheric flows during flux transfer events
Far Ultra Violet (FUV) signatures in the polar ionosphere during a period of magnetopause reconnection are compared with ionospheric flows measured in the cusp ‘throat’ and dusk cell by the CUTLASS Hankasalmi HF radar. Regions of peak FUV emission in the 130.4 nm and 135.6 nm range, observed by the Polar spacecraft’s VIS Earth Camera, consistently lie at the turning point of the flows from the ...

Maps of GPS phase scintillation at high latitudes have been constructed after the first two years of operation of the Canadian High Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN) during the 2008–2009 solar minimum. CHAIN consists of ten dual-frequency receivers, configured to measure amplitude and phase scintillation from L1 GPS signals and ionospheric total electron content (TEC) from L1 and L2 GPS signal...
متن کاملObservations of polar patches generated by solar wind Alfve n wave coupling to the dayside magnetosphere
A long series of polar patches was observed by ionosondes and an all-sky imager during a disturbed period (Kp 7and IMF Bz < 0). The ionosondes measured electron densities of up to 9 ́ 10 m in the patch center, an increase above the density minimum between patches by a factor of 4.5. Bands of F-region irregularities generated at the equatorward edge of the patches were tracked by HF radars. Th...
